"To be an artist is to construct, and to whatever degree one shows the genius for construction in work of any sort, he is that much an artist.  The artist life is therefore the desirable life, and it is possible to all." Robert Henri

When I was in school I was told that representational painting had all been done already and there was no point in bothering with it. It took me 20 years to realize that, point or no point, I still wanted to learn how to paint what I saw. The beauty of the natural world is a constant source of inspiration for me. It has been said, we are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience. My way of expressing my spiritual nature is through my art. Whatever is inside of me, you will see it out there in every brushstroke. I hope that my work will bring you joy when you look at it, just as it has brought me joy in creating it.
I graduated with a fine arts degree from Stanford University in 1972. I began my career as a graphic designer, gradually going into book design and illustration. During that time I started to take some painting workshops, and began to deepen my understanding of fine art.
Over the last thirty years I've studied with some great artists including Harley Brown, Carolyn Anderson, Kevin MacPherson and Matt Smith. Now I enjoy passing along what I have learned about art through classes and workshops.
My work has won numerous awards in art competitions. It is found in both private and corporate collections internationally. I am a signature member of the National Oil and Acrylics Painters Society (NOAPS) and a member of Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters.
I may be contacted for commissions, murals and portraits. My studio/gallery is open by appointment.

Kimbell McCurry

Kimbell McCurry, a native Texan, now resides in the Kansas City area and actively participates in painting events and art shows locally and throughout the country. Kimbell received a BFA from Midwestern State University, worked as a graphic artist and owned a screen printing business for many years. After his children went away to college, he took a drawing class which flourished into a passion for oil painting.

He paints in a representational impressionistic style depicting subjects such as western motifs, landscapes, still lifes, animals and gures. While much of his work is done in the studio, he enjoys painting outdoors and participates in many plein air events.

Kimbell moved to Overland Park in 2009, and is a member of the Greater Kansas City Art Association, Outdoor Painters Society, and is a charter member of the Missouri Valley Impressionists Society.

Tom Holle

Cathie Thompson
Elaine Lierly Jones

Cathie Thompson grew up on a farm in Eastern Kansas. She and her husband raised their children on their ranch, at the edge of the Flint Hills of Kansas.  Much of the inspiration for her paintings comes from scenes of the land in Wabaunsee County and the Flint Hills.  Cathie and her husband now reside in Kansas City-Metro area.

Living in rural Kansas for most of her life, has given Cathie a great appreciation for the outdoors and nature. She enjoys painting outside whenever possible.

“Landscapes and flowers in nature are my favorite things to paint.  I am drawn to scenes that include a road, trail, or creek.  One of the greatest rewards of painting has been the many wonderful people that I have met over the years because of it.”

Cathie says most of her art training came from her mother, Jo Flager.  Her art education has also included workshops from a number of accomplished artists. Cathie is an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America.

I grew up in Kansas always dreaming of becoming an artist. After taking art classes at JCCC, Kansas University, and graduating from Fort Hays State University, I finally ended up in the graphics/printing industry which I have been in for the last 32 years.  In 2000, after visiting the Kansas City Artists Coalition’s Open Studios, I discovered the Olathe Visual Artists. It was soon afterward that they sponsored a workshop in pastels with Donna Yeager. I loved the vibrant colors and buttery texture. My interest continued with classes and workshops from Donna Aldridge, Jerry Brown, Marc Hanson, Lorenzo Chavez, John Roush, Phil Starke, Gary Ozias and with great support from the MidAmerican Pastel Society.

My involvement in Plein Air painting has sharpened my sensitivity to the world around me. Your drawing skills and sense of composition are put to the test as you try to interpret your view. It can be uncomfortable, frustrating and always unpredictable, but also exhilarating, spiritual and extremely rewarding. Immersed in the moment you feel the ever-changing light as well as seeing it. In tackling these challenges I continue to learn and grow as an artist.
